The spirit of Christmas shone through, when St Cuthbert’s Catholic High School held its annual Advent Carol Service at St Mary’s Cathedral in Newcastle, bringing the term to an inspirational close.
More than 100 students from Years 7 to 13 came together for the packed celebration on Wednesday 17 December, for which there was standing room only.
“The service was a beautiful expression of faith and tradition, filled with music, prayer, and reflection, as we prepare for the coming of Christ,” said Deputy Headteacher David Swindells.
Among the highlights of the evening were readings by students, as well as classic carols including ‘O Holy Night’ played by Louis on cello and Daniel on piano, and ‘Mary, Did You Know?’ performed by Wilf Stewart and Head of RE Stephanie Peacock.
“We extend our heartfelt thanks to the boys for their generosity of spirit and talent,” continued Mr Swindells. “Their readings were thoughtful and reverent, and the music – both instrumental and vocal – was exceptional.
“Pieces such as ‘O Holy Night’, sung and played so beautifully, reminded us of the profound hope and joy of the season. Likewise, the moving rendition of ‘Mary, Did You Know?’ invited us to reflect deeply on the mystery of the Incarnation.”
Among the other members of staff involved in the event were St Cuthbert’s Headteacher, Daniel Murray, who wrote the liturgy; Head of Music Iain Anderson; and Music Teacher Alex Proudlock.
“We are also deeply grateful to Canon Simon and the Cathedral community for their warm hospitality, which made this occasion so special,” added Mr Swindells.
“As we approach Christmas, may the message of these carols continue to resonate in our hearts, inspiring us to live with faith, hope, and love.”
