There were tasty treats on offer when pupils at a BBCET school held their own fundraiser in support of this year’s Children in Need appeal.
All year groups at St Catherine’s Catholic Primary in Newcastle took part in the charity bake sale, which was organised by the children on the School Council, with the help of Reception Teacher and School Council Lead Melissa Calvert.
“The school councillors met with me before the event took place to discuss ideas as to how they could raise money for Children in Need,” Miss Calvert explained. “The children decided to hold a bake sale and a non-uniform day, and to sell baked goods for 50p a cake.
“The school councillors fed back to their classmates to inform them about the event, and also made posters to advertise the event, and displayed these around the school.”
Pupils across the school donated baked goods to sell for the cause, and also arrived on the day dressed in a colourful array of different outfits.
“Supporting our Student Council children to lead events such as bake sales allows them to take an active role in making a difference, and helps them develop a strong sense of responsibility, teamwork, and leadership,” continued Miss Calvert.
“By planning and selling baked treats, the student councillors also learn valuable life skills, such as organisation, communication, and money management.”
St Catherine’s was not the only Trust member involved in the charity event. Other primaries taking part included St Columba’s, St John Vianney, St Mary’s in Forest Hall, St Oswald’s, St Mark’s, and Star of the Sea.
“Raising money for Children in Need is very important to our school, because it reflects our core values of faith, compassion, and service,” added Miss Calvert.
“Jesus taught us to love one another and to care for those less fortunate. By supporting Children in Need, our children learn to live out the Gospel message in a real and meaningful way.”
