From Vienna to Bedlington for school opera workshop

There was a high note to the school day for students in Bedlington, when they enjoyed a workshop with two professional opera singers.

Alex Banfield and Wallis Giunta led the careers event at St Benet Biscop Catholic Academy, where they were joined by the cast of the school’s upcoming musical production.

Head of Performing Arts Louise Maughan organised the visit.

“The professional opera singers did a one-hour careers workshop,” she said. “Alex is from Northumberland himself, and is now based in Vienna with his wife and two children. They both work at the Volksoper Wien opera house.

“They saw this as a great opportunity to inspire the next generation of performers.”

She continued: “Alex and Wallis shared their personal journeys into the performing arts industry, and offered an insight into the dedication needed for a career on the stage. They offered a Q&A session where students were able to ask about everything from auditions and performance nerves, to life as a professional performer.

“The school values of respect, resilience, integrity, self-discipline, and excellence are central pillars of a career in the performing arts. Alex and Wallis reflected on the importance of resilience to be a performer – being prepared to accept failures along the way, which are part of the process.”

The students were from Years 7 to 13 at the school, and were inspired by meeting the visitors.

“I really enjoyed the hour – it was so inspirational to hear about Alex and Wallis’s journey into opera,” said Aiden in Year 13.

Lily in Year 9 agreed: “I loved hearing Alex sing. He’s got such a great voice, and it left me feeling really inspired.”

The success of the event means there are plans for an online version to take place in September, when the opera singers will be back in Vienna.

Mrs Maughan added: “Events like these are incredibly special for the school. Having the opportunity to speak directly to two such successful stage performers helps motivate and inspire our students – especially somebody who is local.”
