Good News to bring in the New Year

I am deeply honoured and so happy to receive an OBE in the New Year’s Honours. This recognition is not something I ever expected, and I accept it on behalf of the many dedicated colleagues I have worked alongside throughout my years in education.

I am particularly thankful for the opportunity to lead the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust since its inception, and I am so grateful to the trustees, leaders, governors and staff who made this possible. It was a brave leap of faith to bring all 39 Catholic schools together in such a short time and the commitment shown by its people has been very humbling indeed.

I have been very fortunate in my career to have been guided by some inspirational local leaders who have shaped my approach to leadership. In particular the importance of having the highest expectations for all children. I also strongly believe the staff in our schools are the greatest resource and should be looked after and valued for all they do. Leaders in particular need continued support and development in what has become a most complex and challenging role.

A wonderful event such as this prompts much reflection. I am so thankful for the love of my family, in particular my parents and grandparents who inspired in me the value and importance of a great education. It became my life’s mission and is the transformative gift I wish for all the children of the North East.
