Young readers at a BBCET school were inspired when they received a visit from an award-winning children’s author and playwright.
David Almond, who is one of only three UK children’s writers to have won the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award, spent the morning at English Martyrs’ Catholic Primary School in Fenham, where he spoke to pupils about his life and the creative process, before taking questions from his audience.
“David visited EMCPS to give a fascinating talk to our Year 5 and 6 pupils about his life, and how he comes up with stories from a simple idea which develops into a published piece of writing,” said Year 6 Teacher Jo Watts.
“The Year 5 and 6 teachers all took part, and the children enjoyed a question-and-answer session.
“We were even lucky enough to see some of David’s illustrations, and explained to our children that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.”
The novelist, short story writer and playwright, who is from Newcastle, is known for a wide range of work, including Skellig, Kit’s Wilderness, Heaven Eyes, Secret Heart, The Fire Eaters, Clay, Jackdaw Summer and My Name in Mina.
“At EMPCS, we feel that it is really important for our children to develop a love of books and a thirst for reading,” continued Mrs Watts. “Having David come into school will continue to spark a love of reading and writing in children, and it will ignite their imaginations and enhance their well-being.”
Some of the pupils also got a sneak preview of their next term’s reading material.
“Our Year 6 pupils will study Skellig in the Spring term as part of their English lessons, and David has helped our children understand the novel and want to read the story themselves,” added Mrs Watts.
