It was a colourful occasion when children at St Aidan’s Catholic Primary in Ashington came together to celebrate the Hindu festival of Holi – as well as raising more than £1,400 for charity.
Pupils across all year groups at the school took part in the event, which included a range of classroom-based activities, and culminated in a fun-packed fundraising finale.
“Holi is known as the Festival of Colours and is celebrated by Hindus around the world,” explained Headteacher Julie Teer.
“It marks the arrival of spring and symbolises joy, new beginnings, and the triumph of good over evil. During Holi, people come together to celebrate with music, dancing, and by throwing brightly coloured powders as a sign of happiness and unity.”
“Throughout the day, the children learnt about the meaning and importance of Holi in class,” she continued. “They took part in a range of engaging activities to deepen their understanding of the festival’s traditions, stories, and values.”
The day was brought to a memorable close in the school playground, where the children took part in a sponsored ‘colour run’ to raise funds for the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD), the official aid agency of the Catholic Church in England and Wales.
“We ended our celebrations with a fantastic sponsored colour run, which the children thoroughly enjoyed,” added Mrs Teer.
“Thanks to the generosity and support of our families, we have raised over £1,400 so far. This money will go to CAFOD to support their vital charitable work.”
