World Book Day was brought vividly to life this year, when children at St Alban’s Catholic Primary in Walker were joined by a special guest – although, thankfully, no crocodiles were present.
Pupils of all ages at the school were put through their creative paces by County Durham-based author-illustrator Liz Million, whose popular children’s books include There’s a Crocodile in the House.
“All classes had dedicated time to meet the author,” said Headteacher Ciara Yeoman.
“Session activities included discussion about books, illustration and drawing discussion, and learning about the author’s work.”
School uniforms were also swapped for less formal attire for the event, with the children invited to come to school in their pyjamas, ready to ‘snuggle up and read’, while members of staff also dressed up for the occasion.
“World Book Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the joy of reading,” added Mrs Yeoman.
“Meeting an author like Liz helps children see the magic behind the stories they love, and inspires them to become confident readers and imaginative thinkers.
“Encounters like this remind children that every book can open a new door, spark curiosity, and show them what’s possible.”
