Caring and creativity were key, when students at St Benet Biscop Catholic Academy in Bedlington undertook a series of ‘Acts of Kindness’ during Lent with the aim of raising more than £400 for charity.
All year groups took part in the initiative, which included supporting those in need through collecting for a foodbank, as well as fundraising for charities such as the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD) and St Cuthbert’s Care.
“At St Benet Biscop, our Lent period this year has been a remarkable celebration of transformational love and community spirit,” said Deputy Headteacher Maxine Salmon.
“Throughout this season, our students have embraced opportunities to grow in acts of kindness, embodying the school’s RISE values of Respect, Resilience, Integrity, Self-Discipline, and Excellence, in meaningful ways.
“Each student received a specially designed booklet featuring 40 acts of kindness, encouraging them to support and care for others in their daily lives.
“Across the school, students have actively participated in initiatives to support those in need.”
There was also a creative slant to proceedings, with students putting their own colourful spin on activities.
“A wide range of activities has engaged our students’ talents and passions,” continued Mrs Salmon.
“From bake sales and charity football matches, to coding competitions and more, our students have demonstrated creativity, teamwork, and a genuine desire to make a difference in both the local and wider communities.
“In addition, students have contributed to a stained-glass window project for our chapel, inspired by the events of Holy Week. This creative and reflective activity has allowed students to explore the meaning of Lent through art, leaving a lasting visual legacy within the school.”
The celebrations were brought to a close at the end of term with a ‘Spirituality Drop-Down Day’, which included a Celebration of the Word service, along with the Big Lent Walk for CAFOD.
“The remainder of the day was filled with engaging, fun activities in form classes, providing an opportunity for fellowship and reflection,” Mrs Salmon added.
“This Lent, the students and staff at St Benet Biscop have truly exemplified what it means to live with transformational love, leaving a lasting impact on the school community and beyond.”
