It was all downhill – in a good way – when intrepid students from St Cuthbert’s Catholic High School in Newcastle took to the slopes at Les Trois Vallees ski resort in the French Alps.

The 15-strong group included some members who had taken part in last year’s trip, along with others who were trying out the sport for the first time.

“This year’s group brought together a fantastic mix of returning skiers from the 2025 trip and enthusiastic first timers,” explained St Cuthbert’s Head of PE, Will Hogg, who accompanied the students.

“Despite varying levels of experience, every pupil made outstanding progress throughout the week, thanks in no small part to their ESF [Ecole du Ski Francais] ski instructors, Teo and Leone.”

Les Trois Vallees is the world’s largest ski resort and includes the renowned Val Thorens. During the trip, the group honed their ski skills with daily lessons and practice sessions.

“Under clear alpine skies, pupils developed their confidence and technique on the slopes, steadily building towards their final assessments,” continued Mr Hogg.

“By the end of the trip, every single participant achieved either their Level One or Level Two ESF Ski Badge – a remarkable accomplishment that speaks to their hard work and determination.”

The Level Two skiers also enjoyed a special challenge, when they were given the opportunity to tackle the iconic black run on Pointe de la Masse.

“This challenging descent not only tested their skills but rewarded them with spectacular, panoramic views of Mont Blanc, creating memories that will last a lifetime,” said Mr Hogg.

The ski trip has become a popular annual event on the calendar at St Cuthbert’s.

“From first day nerves to final day triumphs, the 2026 St Cuthbert’s Ski Trip was filled with laughter, teamwork, and achievement,” added Mr Hogg.

“Teachers praised the students for their positive attitudes and willingness to push themselves, noting that both beginners and seasoned skiers embraced every challenge the mountains offered.

“The school looks forward to building on the success of this year’s adventure, as excitement already begins to grow for the 2027 trip.”
