Young singers came together to showcase their talents when children from two BBCET schools joined others from across the city for a special event at Newcastle Cathedral on Tuesday 18 November.

Seventeen Year 4 and 5 pupils from St Lawrence’s Catholic Primary took part in the Winter Choirs Celebration, which was organised by Newcastle Music Service.

“We were invited to take part, along with five other schools, because we subscribe to the Music Service,” said Head of School, Charlotte Robson.

Led by Music Lead and Year 4 Teacher Megan Wilson, St Lawrence’s Choir included children with special educational needs and some for whom English was an additional language.

Their performance featured the hymns ‘Who Put the Colours in the Rainbow?’ and ‘This is Amazing Grace’, along with traditional pieces ‘Bella Mama’ and ‘Tongo’.

“The choir performed the traditional songs a capella, in a different language, and used sign language,” continued Mrs Robson. “We even had two very brave soloists.

“The Winter Choirs Celebration was a sold-out event, with parents and carers from all six schools making up the audience.”

The other BBCET primary school sharing the limelight was Sacred Heart, while the remaining participants included Chillingham Road, Benton Park, Dinnington First, and St John’s.

“It is important for our pupils to be able to perform outside of the classroom,” added Mrs Robson. “Giving these pupils the opportunity to shine in an event like this is very important to us.

“Also, it helps improve their love of music, by listening to five different choirs, all of different sizes, with different aged children, all performing different songs.”
