“Supportive” and “nurturing” St Michael’s Catholic Primary has won praise from inspectors in its latest Ofsted report.

The school in Elswick was described as “a great place to learn”, while the report also singled out the "exemplary" behaviour of the children.

“Pupils are polite, well mannered, and committed to their learning,” it said. “There is a culture of achievement where each individual strives for success. However, pupils are collaborative rather than competitive. They support one another incredibly well, and, as a result, they thrive.”

The “high-quality” curriculum at the school was said to be “exciting and engaging” and to meet the needs of pupils “extremely well”, while staff members were “experts in the subjects they teach”.

Reading was recognised as a particular strength at St Michael’s.

“Reading is prioritised at the school,” noted the inspectors. “Staff are experts in the teaching of early reading and phonics… Pupils are able to use a wide and ambitious vocabulary because staff emphasise this in lessons. There are high expectations for the quality of pupils’ written work.”

“Pupils’ achievement has become stronger over time,” they continued. “In recent national statutory assessments and tests, key stage 2 pupils achieved significantly above national average in several areas. Gaps between disadvantaged pupils and their peers are narrowing quickly.”

The school’s extra-curricular offering also received honourable mention.

“Leaders have created a wide range of opportunities for every pupil to experience something new outside of the classroom,” stated the report. “Enrichment activities include sports competitions at a local stadium, a LEGO robotics club, chess club, and involvement in local public speaking competitions.

“These experiences develop pupils’ talents and interests extensively. Pupils benefit from many opportunities they might not otherwise have had.”

In addition, St Michael’s ‘School of Sanctuary’ status was acknowledged, with the inspectors highlighting the school’s welcoming ethos.

“Pupils are confident and resilient,” they wrote. “They are extremely well prepared to contribute to society and already do so through charity and community work. Pupils understand the importance of tolerance and celebrating diversity. The school cohort incorporates over 20 different languages, many different faiths and cultures… everyone is given a warm welcome and a fresh start.”

“Leaders have created an exceptionally thorough personal social and health education programme,” they added. “This teaches pupils about the importance of respect, positive relationships, money management and balanced lifestyles. Pupils know how to stay safe and healthy, both in their personal lives and online… Staff are knowledgeable and caring in their support for pupils and families.

“Parents enthusiastically praise the school and its staff. The supportive, nurturing role of the school helps pupils to feel that they belong.”

Executive Headteacher Charlotte Chapman welcomed the report’s findings.

“We are absolutely thrilled with our recent Ofsted Report, which beautifully reflects the dedication of our entire school community,” she said. “The achievement is a testament to the hardworking staff, wonderful pupils, and supportive families, who strive for excellence every single day.

“We are incredibly proud that our nurturing environment and high standards have been recognised, and we remain fully committed to inspiring and supporting every child to reach their full potential.”
