Two wheels good for BBCET pupils

Things were ‘wheely’ ramping up, when youngsters at a BBCET school took part in a balance bike workshop.

More than 60 children from Nursery to Year 1 rose to the challenge at St Columba’s Catholic Primary in Wallsend.

Under the guidance of ProRide Coaching and the school’s Early Years staff, the pupils were put through their paces in the playground, which had been turned into an obstacle course for the occasion.

“The children were split into groups of 15, and each was provided with a balance bike and helmet,” explained Headteacher Rachel Steinmetz.

“On the school yard, they took part in challenges, learned skills, and navigated ramps, cones, and obstacles.”

The event proved such a success that there are plans to make it a regular fixture in the St Columba’s calendar.

“This was the first time we had done this, and we will definitely be rebooking,” continued Mrs Steinmetz.

“It gave pupils a fun, exciting experience of exercise, and the children loved being outdoors. It also taught the children the importance of wearing a helmet, using equipment safely, and how to work together as a team.

“The School Council are now wanting to raise money for the purchase of some balance bikes, as they noticed how much the younger children enjoyed the activity.”
