Gosforth pupils sample castle life

History was brought to life, when Year 1 children from St Oswald’s Catholic Primary in Gosforth swapped their classroom for a taste of mediaeval life.

The 30 pupils had been studying kings and queens in History lessons, and gained some real-life insight into the topic when they visited Newcastle Castle.

“During the trip, the children had a tour of the Black Gate and Castle Keep, to explore what life would be like in a mediaeval castle,” said Year 1 Class Teacher Gemma Summersby, who accompanied the group, along with Teaching Assistant Simran Kakwani, and parent volunteers.

“They discover the different features of the Castle, and how it was designed to keep those inside safe and stop those outside getting in. They learnt about different jobs in the Castle, before having their own royal banquet and taking on some Castle roles.”

The Castle Trip has become a regular fixture on the calendar at St Oswald’s, and was taking place for the fifth time.

“Educational visits like this trip are an important part of learning, because they bring the curriculum to life through real experiences,” added Mrs Summersby. “They help children develop confidence, independence, teamwork, and social skills, while encouraging curiosity and engagement.

“Visits also create memorable opportunities that deepen understanding, and support children’s personal, social, and academic development.”
