A clear commitment to inclusivity could be seen, when St Wilfrid’s Catholic Primary in Blyth opened a new Sensory Room to meet pupils’ varied and diverse needs.
The newly developed space has been carefully designed to provide a calm and nurturing environment to support the children’s emotional wellbeing, and enhance their learning experience.
Head of School Claire Meldrum was delighted with the results.
“The Sensory Room has been thoughtfully created within the school to provide a safe, welcoming environment, where children can regulate their emotions, refocus their attention, and feel supported throughout the school day. The development of this space reflected the school’s strong commitment to inclusion and ensuring that every child is able to thrive.”
Pupils’ needs were at the heart of the Sensory Room’s design, which features a wide range of sensory equipment, such as calming lighting, tactile resources, and interactive elements to stimulate or soothe, according to each child’s individual requirements.
Mrs Meldrum continued: “Each feature has been chosen to provide pupils with opportunities to relax, engage their senses, and develop strategies to manage feelings effectively.
“The Sensory Room will be used by pupils across the school, particularly those who benefit from additional support with emotional regulation, sensory processing, or anxiety.
“Staff have already recognised the positive difference that the space has made in helping children feel ready to learn, improving wellbeing and engagement in the classroom.”
School leaders described the new provision as a ‘vital addition’ to St Wilfrid’s.
Mrs Meldrum added: “It not only supports individual pupils, but also strengthens the school’s inclusive ethos, ensuring all children feel valued, understood, and supported.
“The new development is part of the school’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding, inclusion, and pupil wellbeing. By investing in initiatives like the Sensory Room, St Wilfrid’s continues to prioritise the holistic development of every child, creating a learning environment where all pupils can succeed.”
