KEYNOTE
Andrew Cohen | CEO, Brainscape
Cognitive Science of Learning
An inspiring keynote on the cognitive science of learning, exploring what research tells us about how people understand, remember and apply new ideas. This session will translate evidence from psychology, neuroscience and education into practical insights for teaching, training and professional learning.

Andrew Cohen, MA, is an education technology founder and long-standing advocate for evidence-informed learning. Best known as the founder and CEO of Brainscape, Andrew’s work grew out of a personal attempt to master complex Spanish vocabulary while working on anti-corruption projects for the World Bank in Panama. That experience led him to explore how learners remember, forget and retrieve information, and to develop an approach rooted in spaced repetition, active recall and metacognitive self-assessment.
Andrew later completed a Master’s degree in Instructional/Education Technology at Columbia University, where he turned his early learning system into a formal research project and began investigating what he describes as Confidence-Based Repetition: a method that asks learners to judge how well they know something, then uses that judgement to shape future review. His work sits within a strong cognitive science tradition: research reviews have identified practice testing and distributed practice as two of the most effective study strategies, while classic studies on retrieval practice show that testing can strengthen long-term retention rather than merely measure it.
At the conference, Andrew brings a practical, research-informed perspective on how schools can help learners study more efficiently, retain knowledge for longer, and develop better habits for independent learning.
