BBCET pupils blast off into STEM learning at Newcastle STEMFest

It was an out-of-this-world experience, when children from a BBCET school visited STEMFest at the Newcastle Eagles Arena for a celebration of all things Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

As well as learning about STEM subjects and future career options, the Year 6 pupils from St Oswald’s Catholic Primary in Gosforth enjoyed interactive exhibits and hands-on activities – including a virtual trip into space.

“The visit began with an amazing planetarium session, where the children were transported into outer space,” explained Year 6 Teacher Jenny Gray. “They explored planets, stars, and galaxies in a captivating 360-degree experience.

“The session also encouraged them to think about the many different careers that contribute to space exploration, from astronauts and engineers, to scientists and data analysts.”

Following their stellar adventure, the intrepid youngsters explored four themed zones, which focused on Space and Travel; Technology; Environment and Energy; and Manufacturing.

“Each zone was packed with exciting stands and activities designed to bring STEM to life,” continued Miss Gray.

“The children particularly enjoyed using Sphero robotics to simulate how satellites move and communicate in space, building windmills to understand how renewable energy is generated, and even interacting with a robotic dog.”

There were also opportunities for the group to meet professionals working in STEM fields, encouraging them to consider possible careers in those areas.

“The event helped them see how creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork are at the heart of these careers,” added Miss Gray, who is also Computing Lead and Careers Co-ordinator at St Oswald’s

“The class returned to school full of enthusiasm and inspiration, eager to continue exploring STEM in their lessons.

“We are also looking forward to welcoming some of the exhibitors into school in the future to build on this fantastic experience.”
