Harry Potter met Sherlock Holmes, when staff and pupils at a BBCET school in Gosforth rose to the occasion for Book Character Day.
The colourful event at St Oswald’s Catholic Primary took place as part of Book Week, which has become a regular fixture in the school’s calendar.
“Children came to school dressed as their favourite book characters, bringing stories to life in a burst of colour and creativity,” said Deputy Headteacher and English Lead Katie Morris, who helped organise the annual celebration of reading.
“All children from Reception to Year 6 took part,” she continued. “There were lots of Harry Potters, Hermiones, and Rons, Worst Witches, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.”
Members of staff also raided the dressing up box, with Sherlock Holmes, Where’s Wally, and Rowena Ravenclaw all in attendance for the day.
Themed activities included green-screen photographs, where the children could magic themselves into storybook settings, and paired reading sessions, where older pupils could share stories with younger members of the school; while the week came to a close with a Scholastic Book Fair.
“An integral part of our curriculum in school is to promote a love of reading within our children,” added Mrs Morris.
“Days such as this, where their interest in books can be celebrated and promoted, really helps us to keep this culture alive.”
